Who builds concrete retaining walls in Juneau?

Juneau Concrete builds poured concrete retaining walls for homes and small properties across Juneau. I come out to look at the slope and the ground under it and write the estimate myself. Then our own crew builds the wall, and I'm on site for the pour.

Most calls start with a hillside creeping onto a driveway, or a yard that would be useful if part of it were flat, maybe for a concrete pool deck or a shop that needs a new concrete floor. A retaining wall holds that dirt back. A gravity wall does it with sheer weight, and a cantilever wall stands on a wide footing, the concrete foot under it, with steel tying the two together.

Both kinds are rigid, so neither one forgives ground that sinks under it. That's why I look at the ground before I pick a wall type, and why we bring an engineer in when the wall is holding up something else, like a parking pad or a building. My written estimate says which wall we're building and what's in the price.

What a wall takes

  • A look at the slope and ground
  • Wall type chosen for settling risk
  • Digging out and packing the base
  • Forms and rebar, the steel inside
  • A pour planned around the cold
  • Protection while the concrete cures

What to weigh before a concrete retaining wall

  • What sets the price

Height and length come first, then access. A tall wall on a tight lot, or one a concrete truck can't get near, takes more time, more hands and more pumping.

  • What the timing turns on

Weather and design work set the calendar. Cold weeks mean more protection for the fresh concrete, and a wall that needs an engineer waits on the drawings first.

  • Base before finish

When the budget gets tight, cut the fancy face, never the footing. Nobody sees the base on day one, but a pretty face on a bad base just cracks later.

Retaining wall questions from Juneau

  • How much does a concrete retaining wall cost in Alaska?

A retaining wall in Alaska usually costs about $46 to $54 per square foot, and that's the going rate across the state, not our price. Where yours lands comes down to height, length, access and whether it needs an engineer, the things in the price card above. I'll come look and put a figure for your wall in writing.

  • How do I choose a concrete retaining wall for ground that might settle?

Start by finding out whether the ground is likely to settle, because Washington state highway guidance says gravity and cantilever walls have the least tolerance for settling and aren't used where settling is likely. Their upside is that they need no soil reinforcement and their base generally runs about half the wall's height, so they fit tight spots where fill is built up or a slope is cut back. I look at your ground first and only suggest a solid concrete wall where it suits.

  • Can you pour a concrete retaining wall in Juneau in winter?

Yes, as long as the fresh concrete is protected. National cold weather guidance applies once the air drops, or is expected to drop, to 40°F or lower, and it says concrete that's placed and protected properly still gets the strength and durability it needs. We plan cold-season pours around that protection, and I'm there for the pour.

  • How do I find out if my Juneau lot has landslide risk before building a retaining wall?

The city's landslide maps won't tell you, because the City and Borough of Juneau says they give no indication of risk to a specific property, and only parts of the borough have been mapped for landslides at all. Judging one lot's risk and the right fix takes a more detailed investigation of that site. The city has also adopted avalanche maps and rules for building in avalanche areas, so if your wall is going in on a steep slope, that's worth checking before we talk about concrete.

  • Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in Juneau?

The city's own list doesn't settle it for a retaining wall. The division behind the city's engineering permits page reviews site and utility work, and its list names driveway and right-of-way permits, not retaining walls. If it isn't clear for your wall, we ask the CBJ Permit Center before we start, and when a permit is needed we file the application and book the inspections through our Civic Access account.

  • Does a contractor need a license to build a retaining wall at my house in Alaska?

A general contractor needs a residential contractor endorsement from the state to build, alter, bid on or even advertise work on a privately owned home of one to four units. Juneau Concrete is fully licensed and insured, and it's fair to ask anyone else you're comparing to show you the same.
